Looking Ahead to 2009 with JDSU

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

JDSU serves the telecommunications market, providing communications test and measurement solutions and optical products for telcos, cable operators, and network equipment manufacturers. This past November, the company acquired Circadiant, a testing vendor involved in testing SFP+, 10 GigE and other stressed signal test solutions in order to complement the JDSU (News - Alert) optical transport test portfolio.

Jerry Gentile, vice president in JDSU's Communications Test & Measurement business segment spoke to TMCnet about the year that’s just coming to a close and his firm’s outlook on 2009. Gentile also addressed several trends currently shaping the IP Communications industry landscape.

GG: When you look back on 2008, was it a good year for your company?
JG: The JDSU Communications Test & Measurement team is proud of its accomplishments in 2008. In the spirit of innovation and providing the support for our customers, we had a prolific year of customer wins, including The Carphone Warehouse (News - Alert) Networks (CPWN), Deutsche Telekom and LG Dacom. In addition, virtually all JDSU products have evolved over the past 12 months and several new solutions were launched successfully — the most recent being NetComplete Home Performance Monitoring (PM) and the company's NetComplete wireless backhaul test and monitoring solution. JDSU launched several new products, including the T-BERD/MTS-4000 for fiber, copper and triple-play services testing, and MAP-200 and c-Series testers for labs and manufacturers. In addition, the T-BERD/MTS-6000A was launched, designed for the installation and maintenance of fiber and Ethernet-based/Metro networks, offering field service technicians the highest levels of performance and upgradeability on the market. And the new PathTrak Video Monitoring System was released, which segments forward path problems in minutes instead of hours by proactively monitoring analog, digital video, VoIP and HSD channels for RF and MPEG impairments.

GG: What was your firm's biggest achievement last year?
JG: Our biggest achievement was our team's continued dedication and innovation, which was key in continuing to enhance key platforms that enable our customers to more efficiently build and deploy next-generation network systems and broadband services. We were also proud to be named to Deloitte's (News - Alert) Technology Fast 50 Program for Silicon Valley, and to receive INTERNET TELEPHONY's 2007 Product of the Year Award for the PVA-1000.

GG: What can we expect to see for from your company for the next 12 months?
JG: In 2009, JDSU will continue to provide what we believe are the best test and measurement solutions available to the market that accelerate deployment of new services, improve quality and reduce customer churn, and also increase productivity across R&D, production, deployment and service assurance. Our test solutions will continue to address every stage of network and service deployment, from advances in lab and production, field service and service assurance for cable, and wireless and fixed/telecom networks.

GG: In your view, please describe the future of the IP Communications industry?
JG: As a leading provider of triple-play, IP-based broadband services test and measurement solutions to service providers around the world, we see several trends affecting the future of the industry:

·         Industry consolidation.
·         Convergence (News - Alert) of fixed and mobile networks and services.
·         Delivery of higher-bandwidth content to mobile handsets and other devices — spurred by deployment of next-generation wireless networks.
·         Rise of Ethernet — due to increasing backhaul speed rates resulting in the need to handle backhaul efficiently, reliably and cost-effectively.
·         More carriers implementing a systems approach, allowing them to have fewer people manage the test and measurement process.

GG: What sets your company's solutions apart from the competition?
JG: For starters, JDSU offers the broadest portfolio to meet the network and service demands of our customers (which include the largest communications service providers around the world offering video, voice and data services); we offer the most complete set of test solutions that cover the entire lifecycle of both network and service deployments - ranging from development and production in the network equipment manufacturer arena, to deployment in the field, and ongoing service assurance and network monitoring - delivering reliable service, ensuring excellent performance and impeccable quality of service. And our customer base includes both the cable and telecom industries, where fierce competition to deliver bundled services with quality has contributed to our growth.
