Microsoft Partnering with ICSI On Voice Recognition Technology Advancements

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

The future of consumer technology seems to be voice recognition software; every piece of technology that we carry around or work on at home or in the office is starting to boast some form of voice recognition. Apple (News - Alert) made the most noise with their voice recognition software in the form of personal assistant Siri, and now, other smartphone companies are trying to emulate that software with digital personal assistants of their own.

The really interesting part of voice recognition software is when it can be used as more than simply a toy or some neat little function on the latest mobile device. We all saw computers that reacted as if we could have a conversation with them in the best science fiction movies, but Microsoft (News - Alert) is apparently working to make that level of voice recognition a reality. By working with the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), Microsoft is striving to take the next step in voice recognition devices.

The ICSI/Microsoft partnership is working together to make sure that voice technology in the near future is as good as it can possibly be. The International Computer Science Institute specializes in voice technology. The director of the institute, Roberto Pieraccini has even recently published a paper that examines voice technology stretching back to its mere concept six decades ago. Pieraccini is clearly excited about this particular partnership saying, "We get the benefit of working with the world-class people at Microsoft, but also get to work on real problems. It's very important for us to work on real problems, on real data, which we don't have and Microsoft has."

When he was asked what he sees the partnership being able to do in the near future, Pieraccini said, "Eventually, we would like to have speech substituting keyboards and mice. We would like to be able to give commands and to interact with machines, not only at the consumer level like we do with Siri or Google (News - Alert) Voice Search, but also at the level of doing more important things."

At that point, it seems as if voice technology will hit the levels most of us saw in the best Sci-Fi movies of all time – something every single one of us is undoubtedly looking forward to.
