TMCnet IVR Week in Review

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Web Editor

To most people, IVR technology is merely what you encounter when you phone a busy call center. But in reality, IVR tech is moving far beyond its simple origins and becoming more and more complex. This week in the IVR space, there was plenty of news about the future of the technology.

First came a story that compared the human brain to a keyboard and discussed how IVR eliminates the need for keyboards. To take the analogy further, IVR systems can help people with physical disabilities communicate more easily, simplifying the interactions between people. But the research takes this concept as step further, translating brain impulses to letters on a screen.

Another story talked about how integral IVR technology is to our society. After one man tried to give up technology for a year, it shed light on just how our lives are intertwined with tech. Now we have touchscreen, predictive, and even voice-activated technology, and these advances are hard to live without.

One futuristic-seeming application of IVR tech is in the classroom, where it can play a huge role in teaching and learning. Speech recognition technology can be used in teaching robots to allow them to listen to student speech, interpret it, and allow for positive interactions. Whether or not IVR-enabled robots will nudge out human teachers is anyone’s guess, but it is certainly something to consider.

Finally, one other high-tech area that can feel the impact of IVR technology is in dealing with human emotions. Recent innovations have created a Satisfaction Level Assessment System IVR that is better adapted to understand how human beings are feeling. It measures variables within sound wave patterns and discern levels of happiness and satisfaction. These measurements can then be used to categorize a call and help in addressing the concern.

All in all, it’s been a pretty exciting week in the IVR space. Check back here next week for all the latest news!
