Predictive Technology: Thinking for Us So We Don't Have To?

By Allison Boccamazzo, TMCnet Web Editor

First, it was the touchscreen which broke onto the scene and completely changed the way we thought about interacting with our technology – how much closer can you get than that? This question was answered with the innovation of voice recognition technology, which essentially makes it possible to talk to your technology as easily as having a conversation with a friend or family member. How much more personal can you get? According to a Plum Voice blog written today, the biggest revelation has yet to be seen – that is, until now – with predictive technology. In other words, these solutions are technological offerings that are programmed to think and behave almost identically to a human being.

What does this mean for the world? In short, digital enthusiasts are prophesying that technology will eventually be able to tell us what we are thinking before we even get the chance to think it.

Talk about personal.

Now before we all get freaked out and paranoid that robots will begin taking over, it is important to note that we have been interacting with predictive technology more than we realize – even on a daily basis. For example, when you go to type a text or search a term, and somehow your device has already inserted the word you were thinking of. Technology has been able to understand what we are thinking, of course, not in the way suggested now.

The way this type of predictive technology will work is fairly simple. For years, copious amounts of data have been amassing, all collected via good old social media applications, which have potentially given technology the power to understand human behaviors in a way that even we can’t. Not only this, but predictive technology can prove pretty advantageous, too. It can, for example, help companies develop systems that will both accurately and realistically make sense of the infinite gigs of data input collected and stored data, thus correctly and usefully utilizing this critical data to assist companies and consumers in better decision-making. It can even inform individuals of what they actually desire before they have even decided themselves.

Essentially, this will become a technology that is literally faster than real-time. As calculated out in the blog, the multitude of data that applications collect worldwide will eventually lead to the development of algorithms that can mathematically predict behaviors, ultimately knowing what the human population wants better than it knows itself.

While many consider this to be a wonderful technological advancement and something that can help “improve our lives by learning about our bodies, finding a job or starting a business,” others believe that there will be some apparent, unavoidable negatives, allowing for unwelcome and unnecessary intrusion.

What do you think about predictive technology?
