Rovi and Nuance Communications Working on Voice Activated Technology

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Nuance Communications, Inc will begin working with Rovi to advance the voice-activated technology currently available for cable service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers. The collaboration has begun with Nuance (News - Alert) licensing its Dragon TV to work with Rovi’s developing technology.

Dragon TV is a unique voice and natural language solution that can be installed to work with televisions and other devices. The solution allows for the user to access shows, movies, and other content by speaking their channel selections, station names, shows, and movie titles. People can even search for content by actor or genre, while staying connected to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Skype (News - Alert).

Nuance’s plan is to use its licensing to allow for cable manufacturers and other providers the ability to begin implementing this next-generation technology on even more devices. The company is also working with Rovi on developing a new application that would combine the technology of Dragon TV with a new innovative guide allowing for more detailed demands to be understood.

“Consumers love that today’s cable services and program guides offer so many options for shows, movies, content, information widgets and more. But without an easy way to access and discover that content, today’s digital living room experience is lost,” said Michael Thompson (News - Alert), senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. “By integrating Rovi’s data as part of our Dragon TV platform, people will ultimately be able to lean back and speak to instantly find and discover the shows and content they want.”

The plan is for consumers to be able to make demands such as, ‘Find comedies with Adam Sandler,’ and even get search results show to them via their televisions sets when asking questions like, ‘Who plays Chuck on Gossip Girl.’

Corey Ferengul, EVP of Product Management and Strategy at Rovi Corporation, said this working partnership between Rovi and Nuance allows both companies to stay on top of the ever-changing technology world. He added, “Entertainment options will continue to grow. With it will be the complexity of finding and deciding what to watch. Consumers want easy to use and simple ways for discovering entertainment that doesn’t require a remote control with as many keys as a keyboard. Voice brings this capability,” said Ferengul. “Our relationship with Nuance further expands our ability to provide customers – service provider and consumer electronics manufacturers – with an advanced media guide that redefines consumers’ discover and TV viewing experience.”

The companies will be debuting some of the Dragon TV new television voice platform at The Cable Show 2012 at Rovi’s Booth # 1133.
