The still in beta Google Goggles Android (News - Alert) app has had a new feature added - the ability to translate text simply by aiming your phone's camera at it.
Google Goggles is designed to do searches based on images - landmarks, product logos, books covers or other items snapped by an Android phone's digital camera.
The just released version 1.1 goes a step further with the ability to snap a picture of text and Google (News - Alert) will come back with a translation.
Five languages are supported - English, French, Italian, German and Spanish - and has plans to include other Latin-based languages, and further down the road be able translate languages such as Chinese, Hindi and Arabic.
The Gadget Hound found Google Goggles to do a less than perfect job on text photographed from a computer screen but the translation from a menu from a Parisian restaurant was enough to help you order when traveling.
But before you can use Google Goggles you'll need an An Android-based smartphone to use with version 1.6 or higher of the OS. It also requires a data connection on the phone
