Nuance Unleashes Dragon for E-Mail

By Brendan B. Read, Senior Contributing Editor

One of the biggest hassles of using smartphones like Research in Motion's justly famous BlackBerry (News - Alert) line is that it is a pain in the extremities to reply to e-mails with one's fingers with any decent speed or accuracy, regardless of make or model, and RIM's devices are among the better ones in this regard. It is one of the reasons why I don't own a smartphone; my e-mails are generally lengthy. Using keyboards are also not practical or safe while driving and for the latter reason is against the law in growing numbers of American and Canadian jurisdictions.

Now Nuance (News - Alert) has freed mobile workers a.k.a. road warriors and mobile consumers from the hassle of pecking in e-mails on smartphones with the Dragon for Email dictation application for BlackBerry smartphones. Dragon for Email is the latest addition to Nuance's Dragon Mobile Application family, allowing BlackBerry smartphone users to easily and freely speak e-mails - regardless of whether they are creating, replying, or forwarding a message. This keeps them continuously connected to colleagues, family and friends. The app is currently free for a limited time on BlackBerry World for a variety of BlackBerry smartphones.

With Dragon for Email, spoken words are instantly transcribed, giving users the power to simply "say anything" and see their message appear up to five times faster than typing. Dragon for Email is integrated directly into the BlackBerry Email application, giving people a natural, flexible way to interact with their device. People can use voice and text input interchangeably at any time to enter the contact name, subject line, or full message body.

"The recent success of the Dragon Dictation App has produced an overwhelming response from the BlackBerry community and its huge customer base," said Michael Thompson (News - Alert), senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. "BlackBerry is the ultimate mobile device for consumers and professionals who need to be able to read and respond to emails no matter where they are. With Dragon for Email, we're now able to enhance the email capabilities that make the BlackBerry smartphone so incredibly popular."

Nuance's Dragon for Email follows closely behind a similar solution, for the new and rapidly-becoming must-have, the Apple (News - Alert) iPad. Nuance's Dragon Dictation for iPad users includes of course Dragon NaturallySpeaking to speak e-mails. It also includes a new Dragon Dictation Notes feature that lets users speak and save drafts of documents, e-mails, to-do lists and social media status updates. This latest edition is designed specifically for iPad and capitalizes on the large screen size to include the new Dragon Dictation Notes feature, where dictated text can be easily saved, viewed and managed. The app can also be used in either portrait or landscape mode.

"Dragon Dictation has proven to be a must-have app for iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod touch, so it made sense to immediately extend those benefits to iPad," said Thompson. "The iPad is a unique and remarkable device, and with the Dragon Dictation App users can experience added flexibility and convenience as they quickly convert speech into text."
