TCS Integrates QNX CAR Application Platform with TCS Navigator

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

TeleCommunication Systems has integrated its off-board navigation product, TCS Navigator, into the QNX CAR application platform. With QNX CAR, automotive developers can quickly prototype and develop infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters, and other in-car electronics products.

TCS Navigator provides speech recognition, or interactive voice responsetechnology, for fast address entry, real time/traffic-based routing, best-in-class points of interest maps, custom content and branding, and a comprehensive set of core navigation capabilities. According to TCS, this is the first navigation application product to provide intuitive and efficient voice input for address entry. It can also provide the optimal route based on real-time traffic conditions and offer alternative routes.

With the pre-integration of TCS Navigator into the QNX CAR application platform, customers can incorporate navigation services earlier in the development process. Along with sample applications and reference implementations, the QNX CAR application platform also provides a mechanism for delivering software updates and new features to the vehicle.

“The integration of TCS Navigator adds an exciting element to the QNX CAR application platform, especially the reference implementation for infotainment systems," said Tyler Nelson (News - Alert), vice president of marketing and business development at QNX Software Systems, in a statement. "The alliance with TCS supports our strategy of enabling in-vehicle systems that are truly connected -- to the cloud, to portable devices, to each other, and to the surrounding environment.”

The QNX CAR application platformintegrations with TCS Navigator and facilities such as consumer media devices, Bluetooth, content management, Pandora (News - Alert) Internet radio, and many other third-party technologies. According to QNX, this integration will reduce the upfront engineering needed to initiate a prototyping program.

The company recently announced comprehensive software and tools support for automotive, industrial automation, and consumer device customers creating products based on TI OMAP35x processors. The support includes the QNX(R) Neutrino Realtime Operating System (RTOS), the QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite, the QNX Aviage HMI Suite, the QNX Aviage Acoustic Processing Suite, and the QNX CAR reference designs for automotive infotainment systems and digital clusters.
