Upgrades Come to Kindle for Android App

By Juliana Kenny, TMCnet Web Editor

Updating the mobile version of its popular e-reader application, Kindle, Amazon has added free features to the app that already exist on the actual Kindle device. Users can now search for e-books either by type or voice and find the full-text version instantly. They can also browse Wikipedia, lock either portrait or landscape screen orientation, and add notes and highlights to the text that will sync with their Kindle apps with the e-readers they have on other mobile devices.

Through these upgrades, more information is available to users such as discussions, summaries, and reviews of e-books. The Kindle app for Android (News - Alert) still won’t have the capabilities of the app for the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, including embedding videos and audio clips. Barnes & Noble’s e-reader app allows for font changes and the ability to navigate a book by page number, two features the Kindle app for mobile phones does not yet allow. The app is still the most solid one out there for Android users who want to e-read on their phones.

Using Shelfari, Amazon’s social networking site focused on e-books, encourages users to “share their literary inclinations and passions with peers, friends, and total strangers,” according to the network’s page. Shelfari allows users to review e-books, find users with similar literary tastes, participate in online book groups, and interact with the authors.

Personally, I prefer printed books and I also have an iPhone (News - Alert), but if you don’t have either of those around, you own a Droid-operated device, and you get the urge to read, the Kindle app is where it’s at.
