'German city Essen, Conlinet plan FTTH network'
May 01, 2009 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) --
The city holding of German city Essen EVV and Conlinet have set up a
company that will deploy a FTTH network. The network will be open for
other network operators like Deutsche Telekom, Arcor, Versatel,
Hansenet and Unitymedia to provide their triple play services including
digital TV, broadband internet and telephony. The company will be
called essen.net and will become official if the municipal council
approves the proposal of EVV during their session on 24 June. Conlinet
CEO Thomas Simon said that if the approval is given, essen.net will
start connecting the first households in the second half of this year.
Essen.net targets to deploy FTTH to all houses and buildings in the
city and to prevent too much nuisance, the company will partner with
city utilities provider Stadtwerke Essen deploying fibre when gas and
water connections are renewed. The total investment is expected to be
more than EUR 10 million per year from 2010 until all 45,000 houses and
buildings in Essen are connected.
