TMCNet: No Starbucks closings in Frederick, Md.

[July 21, 2008]

No Starbucks closings in Frederick, Md.

(Frederick News-Post, The (Frederick, MD) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jul. 19--For the many local die-hard Starbucks fans who sulked at reports of 600 store closings, here's good news: No Starbucks stores are on the chopping block in Frederick.

Starbucks released the list of store closings, and all seven of Frederick County's stores have been spared. Maryland Starbucks closings include stores in Germantown, Gaithersburg, Bowie, College Park, Glenn Dale, Waldorf and Wheaton. The Seattle-based company's announcement two weeks ago of store closings did not come with the locations to be affected, leaving some local patrons antsy.

Friday's announcement brings relief to more than just Starbucks' patrons, said Jeanette Eleff of Frederick.

"It is good news for our local economy as well," Eleff said. "We have a lot of our people who are employed by Starbucks, and it would be devastating to lose their jobs in this economy."

Frederick resident Katie Coon described herself as a Starbucks regular. "I think the closings were expected," Coon said, reacting to the announcement two weeks ago. "I think they just kept building them. They need to stop building and concentrate on key locations because if a customer really wants a Starbucks, they will find one." But by closing the shops, Starbucks may lose some of its status, said Selina Cardy of Frederick, also a Starbucks patron.

"Some people go there because of its reputation," Cardy said. Coon, a marketing major in college, said Starbucks doesn't advertise the fact that it offers refills for 50 cents. It could increase foot traffic if more people knew that.

"They may not need to advertise their brand, but they need to advertise their products," Coon said.
